Supernatural: Claire Novak, Annoying Teen #57

Supernatural_Season_10_Background

Been a while, eh? Hope everyone had a lovely holiday season, and now that we are getting into the heart of winter, we have Supernatural coming back to our televisions. It will surprize no one who knows me that I spent some of the dark days of No TV (AKA the holidays) rewatching some SPN. I fired up my Google Chromecast and watched season 2 on Netflix. You know what? That season is practically perfect.

Okay, here is the promo for this Tuesday’s brand new episode:

More Charlie! Sweet.

Also, over the break The CW gave us a little present, by confirming season 11, and announcing the show will move back to Wednesdays in March. Oh hey, did you know Jensen is on twitter? He is. For someone who took so long to join, he seems to be getting the hang of it. (He posts lots of adorable picture too!)

Misha Collins won a People’s Choice Award in what was essentially a write-in vote. SPN fans are so awesome!

And TV Guide did a little video about Metallicar, AKA Baby, AKA The Impala.

WHEW! That’s a lot for a holiday break!

So, let’s do a quick recap of where we left off before the break, shall we?

Ep. 9: “The Things We Left Behind”

Truth? I feel like the first bit of this season has been wildly uneven. Looking back at previous seasons, the first bunch of episodes can sometimes meander while setting up the back half of the season, but this year seems especially meander-y. I think so much emphasis on the 200th episode may be part of the reason, and the ever growing issue of making a 22 episode season in a sea of awesome shows that nail it with 13 episodes or so. No matter, even a clunky episode of SPN is better than many, many episodes of most of what is on out there. And I have faith that the caretakers of this show will come through, because they love it as much as we do.

The main problem with this episode is bringing in a character we barely know and trying to make us give a damn about her. Claire Novak is the daughter of Castiel’s vessel, Jimmy Novak, and she has gone delinquent because of the absence of her father and a crappy mom. Castiel, having a case of the feels, decides he will go and try and help her. We do get some amusing NotFather/Daughter scenes, and Cas’ sincerity is always so sweet, but I had a hard time caring as much as he does about Claire. Maybe I am just dead inside. 🙂

We get a little more insight into Crowley and his mum’s relationship, which has loads of potential. Crowley was conceived during a winter solstice orgy! Hee.

So, it turns out that Claire has gotten herself mixed up with a creeper named Randy. They’re always named Randy, aren’t they? Sam and Dean reluctantly come to help Castiel after Claire ditches him, and track her down through a Weiner Hut employee named Dustin. Is The Weiner Hut the new Biggerson’s on this show? (See, I’m not really even paying attention to the show at this point!)

The very best part of this episode? Sam, Dean and Castiel, sitting at a tikki bar, while Sam and Dean tell a story about their childhood involving Daddy Winchester and CBGBs. I love it when they do this. These are the scenes where we really get the bond between Sam and Dean. Just really, really satisfying stuff.

Our boys track down Claire and the scumbags holding her hostage, there is the suggestion that Claire is gonna be raped by the head scumbag when Castiel busts in, saving the day. Sam and Castiel take Claire out of the house, Dean gets beaned by the head scumbag, and the Mark of Cain get unleashed all over their asses. Off camera, of course (darn it!).

Sam, Castiel and Claire walk back into the house to a scene of brutal carnage, Dean kneeling in the middle of all the dead bad guys. Ruh.Roh. Sam is insistent on Dean telling him that all that killing was necessary, and I am all, DAMN STRAIGHT IT WAS NECESSARY. Scumbags of the highest order, in my opinion, probably deserved to die, but it does show that Dean is not in control, especially when he says, “I didn’t mean to do it.” Everyone is decidedly upset.

Is the Mark gonna be the Big Bad this season? Or is this just the beginning of something else? Looking forward to what they’ve got up their sleeves!
