Supernatural: All Saint’s Day

Thank you, Davy Perez, for giving us exactly what we needed this week! Happy Dean, a plethora of call-backs and Easter eggs, a female Sam, clips of an 80s slasher flick – entirely made up by the show, and finally, the real reason little Sammy Winchester doesn’t like Halloween.

It is one of those episodes where is it difficult to do anything but post gifs and quotes because there are so many great moments. If you’d like a list of all the little fun callbacks and Easter eggs, go to the Supernatural Wiki, which is an awesome resource for all things Supernatural.

Really, you don’t need to know the blah blah blah that goes on, because we all know when a ghost is involved. right? I mean, after 14 freakin’ seasons, I can spot a ghost episode from a mile away. Which is fine, because this ghost story is awesome.

But let us begin at the beginning. Dean has been hiding out in his room, away from all the strangers milling about his home, and watching his favorite horror flicks. Sam has found a case he knows will interest his brother. Once he drops that it involves a Thundercats Panthro action figure, Dean is up and ready to go!

The victim, Stuart, is the kind of geek that we hate, so when the ghost of the previous owner of the comic book shop he works at starts trying to kill him, I kind of understand. But Sam and Dean are heroes, and even the jerks get saved.

Our boys have arrived, dressed as insurance adjusters. I love the short sleeved dress shirts, and Sam’s pocket protector, and that this is what they think insurance guys dress like. They still use rock legend aliases, this time from Deep Purple, but they call the insurance company Campbell & Sons, which is so freakin’ cute. And then Dean adds a pair of glasses that are for squares, but they of course make him look extra hot, which is SO UNFAIR.

After meeting with Stuart at his mom’s, our beautiful boys stake out the house, and when Stuart’s mom leaves for a Halloween party, Sam and Dean do this so she doesn’t see them:

Heeeheeeheeeeeee!

So Stuart is in the hospital after being run through with a chainsaw. Dean camps out at the hospital to keep an eye on Stuart, while Sam heads on over the the comic book store to do a little investigation, where he gets to meet his “Wonder Twin”, Sam.

Two Sam’s for the price of one!

Sam finds out that Jordan, the dead comic book owner, is cremated (of course!), and thwarts an attack by the Hatchet Man, who has locked down the shop, and is off through the town of trick or treaters. Our Sam takes wee Sam into a back room, and jerry-rigs a bomb with cleaning supplies and a Scooby-Doo lunchbox! The door blows open and they escape. The two Sams are like peas in a That-Was-Cool pod.

At he hospital, Dean gets to fanboy with Stuart’s bestie, Dirk, about All Saint’s Day III (and we get a trailer for the film before a commercial break, which is super awesome 80s loveliness). When Dean finds out that the Hatchet Man life-size figure has been possessed by Jordan, and is heading to the hospital, Dean gets really excited. Like you do!

Trailer!

And now, back to the show!

Dean puts a salt circle around Stuart’s bed, and tells Dirk (who is still freaking out about the news of ghosts and vampires and the like), to stay inside the circle while Dean goes off to find his favorite horror film villain. So of course Dirk wanders off. As we cut between a couple of security guards watching ASD III, and Dirk running through the halls, we get a shot for shot reenactment of the movie with Dirk. It’s clever and fun.

Dean corners the Hatchet Man in the morgue, saves Dirk, and as Sam2 approach, Sam the shorter figures out that the ghost is attached to a set of keys on Hatchet Man’s hip. Dean grabs them, Sam the female grabs some ethyl alcohol, and they burn the ghost away.

That was awesome, as Dean would say.

As Sam and Dean drive home, Sam tells the story of puking all over the girl he had a crush on back in middle school, and the source of his hatred for Halloween. Extra cute bit – the boys are still wearing their insurance guy costumes, which is funny, because they always change back into their regular threads.

After three episodes of drama and misery, this episode was a fantastic palate cleanser. It was all the things we love about Supernatural, and Dean got to get back in the groove, which is always good news for us.

The whole episode is full of quotes, I fear if I listed them all, it would just be the script for you to read. But I would like to give a special shout-out to Dean’s list of couples costumes for him and Sam for next year, and all the excellent pictures they brought into my head:

  • Batman & Robin (Dean is thinking he’s Batman, I’m sure)
  • Bert & Ernie (“That’s weird.” – Dean)
  • Rocky & Bullwinkle (Crowley approved, I’m guessing)
  • Shaggy & Scooby! (They would get Scooby snacks!)
  • Turner & Hooch
  • Ren & Stimpy (I love that Dean knows Ren and Stimpy)
  • Thelma & Louise (Yes, oh god, yes please)

Next!! The vampires are acting weird!
