Supernatural: The Wrestling Is Fun, But The Rod Of Aaron Is More Important

I watch a lot of shows on The CW. Like, most of them. I am not a millennial, the network’s desired demographic, so it’s sometimes odd that I watch so many of their shows.

Whatever. I do what I want. 😉

Last week The CW renewed all of their currently airing shows. All eleven of them. So that means that the criminally underrated show My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend gets a second season, and Supernatural will be getting a 12th. That’s pretty amazing, and makes this TV fan very happy. Also, if you really like sci-fi/apocalyptic type shows, I heartily suggest The 100. It’s very good.

But we’ve got the rest of season 11 of Supernatural to enjoy before we start looking to next year, so on with the recap!

First off, Dean is wearing one of my favorite plaid shirts on him for a good chunk of the episode. So, yay for me.

Dean is suffering from cabin fever, and he convinces Sammy to go to the funeral of a wrestler they remember from back in the olden days. It says a lot about these guys that going to a funeral seems like a cure for restlessness and boredom.

And while the boys bits of the episode are the bulk of it, it is really an excuse to watch them (mostly Dean) fangirl, and wax nostalgic for one of the few happy memories they had in their childhood. I liked Dean having fun in the ring so much it is pretty much the only pics you’re getting this recap. I mean, who hasn’t had this kind of wish fulfillment fantasy regarding whatever it was that gave us joy when we were little.

So of course, the SPN writers have to blow a big ol’ hole through all the Winchester joy, because Sam and Dean don’t ever get anything nice for very long. The “hero” wrestler turns out to have made a deal with a demon ten years prior, and we all know what that means.

Except! It’s worse than that. Since Lucifer is currently running Hell, and ignoring everything except getting his hands on another God weapon, this crossroads demon has taken matters into his own hands, and is using the old wrestler to help him cull some extra souls.

There is plenty of sadness to go around, and once Sam and Dean dispatch the demon, they leave their childhood hero to his fate, with the all too familiar call of the Hell hounds coming to take a soul.

But the real meat of the episode is what is happening with Casifer and Crowley. Misha is still having a ball playing Lucy as Cas, or Cas as Lucy, and tormenting his puppy, the Hawaiian shirted, floor cleaning Crowley.

But even though he is down, Crowley still has a little King of Hell left in him, and when the demon Simmons opens his cage and hands him a key, he jumps back into action. And after acquiring a proper black suit, he leads Simmons to one of his secret storage rooms that doesn’t remain secret for very long. Because the whole escape was a set-up!

After some “No, I’m more evil!” back and forth between Crowley and Casifer, the Rod of Aaron is revealed to be much like the other Hand of God weapon we’ve seen. It’s a one-hitter. Which is important in maybe more than one way.

There is obviously a finite number of God weapons, and these numskulls need to stop using them for themselves. But maybe, just maybe, they’re not one-hitters at all. Maybe some magic combo of all these weapons will act like a nuke, and will wipe Amara off the field for good.

Or maybe there is some other trick I’m not thinking of. (This is the more likely scenario.) But the point here, is that the last weapon wasn’t just a fluke, and there is a pattern forming here.

The good news? Crowley has escaped, and will most likely show up at the Winchester doorstep at some point, and who knows if we will get the Winchester friendly version, or will all these jabs at him from Rowena, and then Lucifer, finally send him into the evil spiral we all kind of miss?

I honestly have no idea how all this will shake out, and I like it.

Quotes!

Dean: “Should I go say hi? I should go say hi. I’m gonna go say hi.”

Dean: “Hi, s-sir, I saw ya’ standing over here, and I told my brother I should come over and say hi. Hi.”

Sam: “You were my first crush.” Rio: “You weren’t one of those guys that had my poster over their bed?” Sam: “What? Uh, no.”

Dean: “Think about it, town after town, putting your ass on the line for next to nothing. No money, no glory… wow.” Sam: “You realize you just, literally, described our jobs?”

Dean: “What, did he get in a tickle fight with Edward Scissorhands?”

Crowley: “With all due respect, Simmons, I don’t think you can handle my rod.”

Next! A haunted house, creepy kids, and some old friends. SWEET.
