Usual spoiler alerts. Do I even need to say that?
Anyway, I’ve seen a lot of hate the last couple of days for Tuesday’s episode, but I loved it.
Yes, at least three beloved, probably four (Frank), characters met their demise in Davy Jones’ locker. No, we don’t feel all that much closer to finding out what’s going on. Yes, it was unnerving that we just wanted to punch Sawyer and say, “JUST LISTEN TO JACK ALREADY!”
But this show has never been about happy endings. In fact, I suspect that Sayid, Sun & Jin’s endings are about as happy as one could expect from Lost.
Sayid was under the thrall of Flocke the last few episodes. It was nice to see him break free of that psychological hold and give his own life to save his friends. They are his friends and he was never going to be with the love of his life, in this reality or any other. He realized that. If there is an afterlife, then Sayid can be with her there. And maybe he will be, Star Wars-style? (I wouldn’t mind Hurley “seeing” the two of them, smiling, holding hands, before the end.)
Sun and Jin have been desperately trying to find each other pretty much the entire run of the series. We started with Sun wanting to escape Jin, but loving him too much to leave. They recaptured their love over the last six years and it’s been a tender love story we’ve watched. In the end, they’ll be together for always, though I cried when their hands separated upon their death.
Their daughter is alive, though, and if all the candidates die, my money’s on her being the final candidate (not a new theory, and one I’ve mentioned before, but the carnage we’ve seen seems to be leading in that direction ever more).
So I have two competing thoughts on what might happen:
1) The alternate universe Losties will figure out enough of what would happen if they reverted to the pre-Jughead version of reality and want to stay there. Pretty much without exception, their lives are better there. Sayid may not have it too great, but he’s not really doing much worse. And he just blew up in the original timeline, so that’s not a very good ending for him. With this alternate timeline, Ben never kills Jacob, so Jacob is still there to keep the cork in the bottle, at the bottom of the ocean (with both vessels – Jacob’s body and MiB’s body killed by the island being in the murky deep, it would seem they’re both without means to get off the island, and that’s probably the best thing).
2) Everyone dies. Hurley, Claire, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Desmond (NOOOOOOOOOOOO). They’re all gone and years later, Sun & Jin’s daughter somehow finds her way to the island to try to figure out what happened to her parents, then becomes the new Jacob.
If you didn’t at least almost bust out crying when Hurley broke down, by the way, you have no soul. Just sayin’.
Of course, this could all be wrong, and Jack could be the new Jacob. Or Desmond could still be alive (but if he doesn’t end up with Penny, Team Darlton has some serious ‘splainin’ to do) and be the new Jacob.
Or what if Des becomes the new Jacob and Jack the new MiB?
My head hurts now.
I’m still not 100 percent convinced that the MiB is actually the bad guy. It’s not like Team Darlton to be so obvious. I suspect that it’s not quite as black and white as it seems to be. Or maybe I’m just fooling myself.

Woah, woah, woah. “Probably four”? Lapidus was the man and will be missed. Hopefully he visits Hurely from beyond the grave, and then he and Eko (also the man) go out for slurpees or something.
That’s my new prediction for the final, 2.5 hour long episode.
I cried my face off for the last ten minutes of that episode, and I thought it was awesome. The people who are mad don’t get this show at all, IMO. In fact, I was wondering when some of our Losties were gonna die, because there is no way all of them were getting out alive. No freakin’ way.
I may be blinded by the extreme hotness of Matthew Fox this season, but I want him to be the new Jacob. His character has been so kick-ass, I would love it if he was there forever, locking horns with MiB.
And please Darlton, I know I ask this every week, but please give Desmond and Penny a happy ending. That is the only thing I really, really want.
Over on EW.com, there are comments to the effect that MIB is the evil villain, so I think that finishes that. However, part of the magic of LOST is that they can still make their villains sympathetic. Or did you ever imagine back in Season 2 that you’d be sympathetic to Ben Linus?
So I suspect that they will reveal MIB’s backstory, which will be tragic in its own right, and help understand how he got to be evil.
In other theories: I’m pretty convinced that Widmore is working for SmokeLocke.
I also think that SmokeLocke’s escape plan may involve invading Sideways Locke’s mind — and that Sideways Locke knows this, which is why he wants to stay in the wheelchair. Don’t want Smokey to be free AND mobile, do we?
And THAT, in effect, would make Locke . . . the new Jacob (MIB’s captor).
@Dave – I included Frank among the beloved characters. I’m still kind of in denial and hoping he manages to survive, because I totally wanted to see more of him; he should have been there from Season 1.
@Erika – I think Jack has proven he is an awesome Jacob. And totally yes on Desmond/Penny. Keeping them apart is the only thing, at this point, that could REALLY piss me off.
3) Lee – Yeah, since writing this someone else pointed to comments by Team Darlton that MiB is definitely evil, so that is definitely that. I agree completely with what you said about Ben, though. I think this coming week is going to give us Ben & MiB’s backstory and who those two boys are on the island.
I love your theory about Flocke; I don’t think it’s what’s going to happen, but I gave up thinking I really knew what was gonna happen a long time ago, so that means nothing.
Maybe Jack and Sawyer will become the new Jacob and MiB.
Now that Sayid is gone, I really don’t care.
*throws something*
And call me an evil wench, but when Kate got shot, I screamed, “Die, bitch, die!!!”
Hell, maybe Jin is still alive. The only hand that looked dead was Sun’s. Am I the only one who was like, “HELLO? What about your DAUGHTER?” Tragic romantic ending vs. “our daughter is an orphan now.” Nice!
I liked Lapidus too.
I’m not a hater, but seriously, I can only process one death per episode. And it just seemed like an easy way out for the writers to me. “Hey, we only have a couple of episodes left so let’s put them all in a sub, blow it up and knock off a bunch of them at once.”
Isn’t it ironic that the four candidates that the others asked Michael to bring were the ones who got off the sub??? Coincidence? Like that exists here!
I think Sawyer, Jack and Kate will get blown back in time to the beginning, and both knock Kate up, who will beget Jacob and MIB! The end!
@Erinn – *hug* You need one. While I kind of agree with you about Jin & Sun and their daughter, I also think their daughter may be THE candidate. The Kwan whose name was not crossed off. I do know a lot of people who’d be OK if Kate died, though. I like all the characters, though, because they all have a role to play.
@Scott – oooooooh, very interesting. I hadn’t thought of that at ALL, but you’re totally right. And that CANNOT be a coincidence.
I must be one of those that don’t get this show at all, then.
Because this week’s episode pissed me off to no end. (Erinn, will you be my new BFF?) I’m not going to get into all of it here (because really, no one wants to hear my ranting), but I think Darlton hates love. What other explanation would there be for reuniting Sun and Jin one week after eons of separation, then killing them the very next? And Lapidus, we barely knew ye.
I’m stopping there, or I’ll be in a LOST-inspired funk for the rest of the day, and I was only just calming down from my LOST-inspired rage.
Maybe Jack and Sawyer will become the new Jacob and MiB.
Now that Sayid is gone, I really don’t care.
