Supernatural: Jefferson Starships

Dean is awesome. That is all.

 

Just kidding!! Honestly, I couldn’t ask for much more from this episode. Funny, sweet, gore-riffic, and a couple gut-punches. *claps* Also, one of the funniest running gags of the season, Dean naming the new hybrid monsters Jefferson Starships because “They’re horrible, and hard to kill.” My favorite bit was Sam, clearly not believing he was going along with it, but calling them Starships anyway. Hee. By the end of the episode, all of them were referring to the Starships like they had been doing it for years. Loved it.

And you know what, I am not in the right frame of mind to recap, so here are the important points from this episode.

  • Castiel is awesome, and madly in love with Dean. Can you blame him? I mean not only is the man hot, but we got to see that ingenuity that hasn’t been so prevalent recently with the tricky way he delivered the Phoenix ash to Eve. Once Eve was done, Cas gets his angel mojo back and WHOOSH, takes out all the monsters with that deadly and heavenly light of his. Totally swoonworthy. Also, I think Dean has a total man crush on Cas, what with all the ribbing that went on between those two this episode. Dean and Castiel are now officially my favorite couple on TV.
  • Crowley is not dead. Now, if I had been paying close attention, this shouldn’t have been such a big surprize as it was. Castiel has been dropping massive hints all along that something dodgy was going on, and quite frankly that sweet little angel does not lie well at all. I am pretty sure where they are gonna go with the Cas/Crowley partnership, because I am not totally stupid, but any chance to see more of Mark Sheppard on my TV is fine with me.
  • Castiel+Bobby+Sam+Dean make a great team. More of these four working together please! I loved every combo of these guys, and it gave the show a nice close, familial vibe making me want root for them again. After a few seasons of whiny, angsty, apocalypse-ness we get to see them work together like the close family they are. Yay!!
  • Sam and Dean have truly reconnected. This all felt very much like a good season two episode with all the brotherly love and trust going on. It is such a relief to have those boys back in each others good graces. Even though taking those kids back to their uncle ultimately bit them in the ass, the look they gave each other in the NotMetallicar was melty goodness. Also, the reaction to Eve turning into MommaWinchester gave me further proof that these two lovely boys are back on the same page.

This felt like an old school Supernatural. There have certainly been some missteps this season, but if this is where we end up, then that’s fine with me. There was a magnificent balance of funny digs and splendid gore. A big pit of despair mixed with cunning and a sweet victory for our boys. This week’s episode is gonna be all about Castiel, and I am excited. I have a feeling we are gonna be a wee bit disappointed in our sweet little angel. Hopefully Dean will not be too hard on his new Bestie.

Supernatural: The Truth (Sort Of…)

First off, let me gripe about the promo monkeys over at The CW who spoiled next weeks episode by revealing what is actually up with our darling Sammy. I will not say what it is here as I know some of you avoid promos like the plague, and some of you watch online where you don’t get the promos, but SERIOUSLY The CW? Gah!

There have been many shows through the years that employ the truth-tellin’ scenario we see in this weeks episode, and it almost always results in hilarity. I must admit that I laughed right out loud at Bobby’s confessions about pedicures and his TV watching habits. Was it a convenience, seeing as our Handsome Hero Dean needed some truthiness? You bet it was, but let me tell you, if they were to drag this whole What’s-Up-With-Sammy scenario out for the entire season, I may have had to jump out my window, so I am glad for any trick that will get us to the bottom of Sam’s UN-Sammyness as quickly as possible.

Once again, we get to see a great range from Dean. Sorrow over his Lisa break-up, impishness when he figures out the truth curse is now on him, and all the pain he has tangled up with his lovely brother. I am sure there are plenty of SamGirls who were really pissed that Dean beat the ever lovin’ snot out of his little brother. It was pretty brutal, but I totally understood all the anger and fear and confusion taking over and coming out all over darling Sammy. Veritas was right, those two boys have got allllll kinds of issues.

Next week, more Castiel (Yay!!), more Bobby (woohoo!), and hopefully a good explanation of what is going on with Sammy (which The CW already spoiled for me… arg!).

Supernatural: Mr. Crowley

I love Mark Sheppard. He has shown up on every single one of the shows I love, starting with The X-Files way back in the way back, and including shows like 24, BSG, Dollhouse, Firefly, White Collar, Chuck, and on and on. I think the only one he has missed is Lost. I suppose the island was just to much for him, eh?

Regardless of my love for the man, and his character of Crowley here in Supernatural is fun, I found this last episode a little… unnecessary? I mean, we are going back to Sam’s college life, and flogging that dead girlfriend Jessica yet again? Really show? We get it, Sam has been in the pipeline for a while.

I am sick of the show giving us a reason to worry about Sam and Dean’s relationship. I was very happy to have those delicious boys back in each others good graces, and that look Dean gave Sam after he killed Brady (or whatever his stupid name was), made me worry for those boys all over again.

Plus, after that wondrous introduction to Pestilence the week before, we get nothing of him. A totally Matt Frewer free episode! How unfair…

So, it took a whole episode for us to get to anything worthwhile and relevant to the coming apocalypse. Crowley talks Bobby into selling his soul (Oh boy, I DO NOT want Bobby to die, Kripke!!), and that nasty Croatoan virus may be the death of us all. Two episodes to wrap up the apocalypse? We shall see how that goes (do you sense a little bitterness this week? Sorry about that).

Also, if you saw the promo for the penultimate episode, you now know that you don’t want to be walking down the street and brush up against Death. Because that would be bad.

Supernatural: Sam, Interrupted

The first episode back after the winter break gave us a very different view of the brothers than we’re used to. Each had to come to grips with the demons (pardon the pun) they face, in his own way.

I think what I liked best about this episode was that just when we thought we knew what it was about, we were wrong. More than once.

Sure, in the end, the identity of the wraith was obvious, but what’s that they say about hindsight being 20/20? I’m consistently impressed by how original the show manages to be.

First, I want to say this about the episode’s final scene: I loved how it made Dean FINALLY forgive Sam, even though that’s not what it was about on the surface. Dean’s entreaty to Sam, “Are you WITH me?” wasn’t simply a question. It was a question, an invitation, a plea.

Those four words were Dean’s way of saying, “You’re my brother. What’s past is past. We have a world to save and the only way we can do it is together. I love you.” Well, that’s what it meant to me, anyway.
