The Soloist premiere - Paramount Studios

I have not had a chance to watch Flash Forward or this week’s Supernatural yet. I will see them before the weekend’s out and muse upon them in this spot. I know you can’t wait.

Meanwhile, here’s a tidbit of news for you: Stephen Root will have a “multiepisode arc” on 24‘s Season 8, according to Backstage. He’ll play Ben Prady, “an officer of the Department of Corrections looking into a parolee gone missing.”

Well, that can’t be good. You’ll recognize Root from
Office Space (Milton) or as the nerdy accountant vampire who sold his blood to Lafayette in Season 1 of True Blood. Even if you don’t recognize his face, if you watched King of the Hill, you’ve heard his voice a zillion times, in Bill.

3 new boys join the 24 cast

They’re Rami Malek, Julian Morris and Hrach Titizian and will be on for several episodes apiece, at least.

picture-11

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

• Malek will play  Marcos, a would-be suicide bomber who is Arab American with sympathies toward radical Islam
• Morris will play a CTU SWAT agent
• Titizian will play Nabeel, the second-in-command of security for President Hassan (Anil Kapoor)

Now, this also means some things have changed. Back at the season finale time for Season 7, Kapoor was set to be the brother of/secretary of state to the president of this unnamed Middle Eastern nation.

At the time, I opined that I hoped this would not be another Behrooz plot, as Kapoor’s character’s wife and daughter were part of the plot. Of course, with Kapoor now being Mr. President, I’m not sure what other changes have been made. I need to read up, I guess.

Anil Kapoor of Slumdog Millionaire will play the brother of/secretary of state to the president of yet another unnamed Middle Eastern nation. His wife and daughter are in the picture, but I’m hoping this isn’t another Behrooz plot.

And for the sharp-eyed fans among us, you’re not wrong – Titizian had a blink-and-you-missed-it role in the Season 6 crapapalooza, two whole episodes, last seen accompanying Abu Fayed into the warehouse before the nuke went off. Presumed dead.

24, Lost – the most addictive shows of all time

July 23rd, 2009 | by | 24, battlestar galactica, csi, doctor who, friends, heroes, jack bauer, lost, prison break, sex and the city, the sopranos, the wire

Confirming what most TV hounds already knew, 24 and Lost topped the list of LoveFilm.com’s most addictive television shows of all time.

Now, some might say that Lost is more addictive, and I can see that point to a degree. After all, 24 and Lost are my two favorite shows, now that Battlestar Galactica‘s off the air (still looking forward to The Plan this fall, though!)

picture-11Lost banner

But where Lost is addictive for that hugely mystifying secret that lies beneath it all, carrying its fans from season to season, with the promise of wrapping it all up next year, 24 is more or less a big blast of televised heroin (a drug that, coincidentally, Jack Bauer was addicted to briefly in Season 3). No matter how much you tell yourself you’re going to stop watching, you just have to check it out one more time, just one more time. (See also: Lays Potato Chips.)

24 + Battlestar Galactica = Awesome

It’s almost as if the Television Gods looked down upon Earth, said, “What casting decision could we make that would thrill Amy Vernon like no other?”

picture-11

Katee Sackhoff is joining the cast of 24 as a regular for Season 8.

Let me repeat: Kara “Starbuck” Thrace is going to be a CTU data analyst in the reconstituted CTU in New York City for Day 8.

Yes, I am getting a mashup of 24 and Battlestar Galactica. I’m the luckiest girl in the world!

Here’s what Michael Ausiello had to say:

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Battlestar Galactica heroine has been tapped to play the series regular role of Dana Walsh, a highly respected and down-to-earth data analyst at the new and improved New York branch of CTU.

She’s in a relationship with fellow agent Davis Cole (played by the just-cast Freddie Prinze. Jr.), and she apparently has a skeleton in her closet she’s trying desperately to keep hidden.

Just wondering: Does CTU ever hire anyone who doesn’t have some sort of secret they’re desperately trying to hide? Remember Erin Driscoll’s schizo daughter?

Ratings: Worst. Season. Ever.

May 22nd, 2009 | by | ratings, season

May

OK, I guess the TV seasons before most people had televisions were worse, but this season was for the birds, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

tvs

The four major networks (that’d be CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox – sorry CW) lost an average of 16 percent of viewership in the coveted “demo” – adults 18-49. That includes DVR use.

Fox was on top, followed by CBS, ABC and NBC. But “on top” still includes a steep drop.

Why is this?

A whole mess of things.

First off, a lot of people are watching online – legally and illegally (Hulu an example of the former, BitTorrent an example of the latter). I know some folks who don’t have televisions, even, and only watch what they like online.

Second, a lot of people watch on DVR, but not within that 7-day window included in ratings. For example, my husband and I haven’t watched Season 2 of Damages yet. The entire season is sitting there on our DVR. We just finished up the entire first seasons of Dollhouse and Better off Ted in a few days in marathon viewing sessions. (I’ll be writing about BoT in a couple days). I still have episodes of Reaper, the season finale of Supernatural and Sunday’s episode of Breaking Bad on my DVR, waiting for me to have a chance to sit down and watch ‘em.

24: Season finale

May 19th, 2009 | by | 24, season finale

May

I know there are many people out there who don’t agree with me, but I thought last night’s finale was rather good.

Look, it’s 24, and it’s been written so deep into a corner over the past several years that it’s amazing they’ve been able to write their way back out.

24-billboard

But the rebound from last season was nothing short of spectacular.

Over the course of the season, there have been more twists in the plot than on a strand of DNA.

But the finale managed to bring them all together, albeit with a whining Tony who is a mere shadow of the shell of the man he once was. We all knew that Michelle’s death hit him hard. And, OK, she was pregnant, so that makes it even harder. But watching Tony was like going back to the TV show Pretender, when Jared was doing a patented Triple Pretend.

Except for one thing: On Pretender, we always were in on Jared’s pretending. We knew he wasn’t a doctor. Or a car thief. Or whatever.

Tony? It shifted almost from week to week. Gave me a headache. Was Tony bad? Was he good? Was he bad? Was he good? Was he badly good? Goodly bad? Just plain ol’ bat-guano crazy??

Ding ding ding ding! We have a winner! Bat-guano crazy.

The Carnival of Bauer!!! … filler episode edition

May 8th, 2009 | by | 24, blog carnival, carnival of bauer, liveblog

Honestly, it’s hard to get too excited about an episode that was so obviously filler and in which so little happened.

24-billboard

I mean, what does it say when Kiefer Sutherland headbutting a fashion designer on the streets of Manhattan in defense (kinda sorta) of Brooke Shields is almost more interesting than the Monday episode (for the definitive story on this, see Point / Counterpoint)? Especially when there are only three hours left in this day and we still have no idea what the frak is going on.

I guess that’s why I never really got around to a separate blog post on it this week and decided to wait for the weekly blog carnival, which I am always happy to host.

Basically, this is what happened this week:

24: Jack has a moozure

May 1st, 2009 | by | 24

May

I don’t know why I’ve had a hard time this week writing about 24.

billboard

I think it’s a combination of factors:

Tony is so utterly bad (unless he’s not) – boo! Chloe’s back – yay! Jack’s dying – boo! Jack went off on Janis Gold (otherwise known as Grimace, in some circles) – yay! Larry’s still dead – sorry, best I can do is neutral on that one. I only liked him for about 5 minutes before he was killed.

I can’t believe that Jack is going to die, and I assume that Kim is giving blood or spinal fluid or stem cells or whatever it is that she needs to donate in order to save Daddy, despite what he said. At least she’s no longer with Pony Boy.

Jack cannot die from mad cow. There’s another season to go.

There’s still a chance Tony might still be good, but I doubt it.

Chloe is totally Chloe, which makes me happy. But I also hate Mary Lynn Rajskub for looking that good so soon after having a baby.

Janis must be stopped. I don’t think she’s the mole, though. Unfortunately. It would be really sweet if she were.
