I have been living a bit of a lie, and I am ready to admit to it. As much as a sci-fi nerd I cop to being, I always had to just smile and nod along whenever the subject of Doctor Who and Torchwood came up.  Nervous that my cover would be blown, I employed the usual tactics: smiling; ‘uh-huh-ing’; laughing when every one else did. Well no more, my friends. No more. How about a nice big HOORAY! for Netflix.

Yes, as usual, I am late to the party. People have been raving about Netflix for ages now. My old roommate used to have it and we watched all kinds of stuff because of their wonderful DVDs being delivered right into our hot little hands. But now. Now! I have Netflix with the streaming, instant play option, and I am so very, very happy.

Once I finish up with Doctor Who (I am speeding through season three as we speak), I will make my way over to Babylon 5. That is if I get the idea of a BSG rewatch outta my head.

The latest Doctor Who, Victory of the Daleks, is not a terribly original or interesting entry into the series. Mark Gatiss, member of the superb comedy troupe the League of Gentlemen, gives us a very pedestrian entry mixing two of the more tired elements of Doctor Who throughout its history – Daleks and historical bigwigs (this time Sir Winston Churchill).

This could have been any Doctor, with any companion, and the new Daleks look like they’re candy-coated. We’d say they look like M&Ms, our friends across the pond would call them Smarties. Either way, it’s far less frightening to run from candy than the dirty, war (and Doctor) scarred pepperpots of old.

My fellow Americans,

You’re about to be re-introduced to a character as old as Kennedy Conspiracy theories, TV’s the Doctor of BBC’s Doctor Who. Throughout the nearly fifty year history of the science fiction show, Americans have had to wait as much as years for their fix of the quirky, other-worldly hero who travels around in a blue box.

Wait no more. Well, you can wait two weeks, but it’s hardly the formerly glacial pace. BBC America is rebroadcasting Britain’s Doctor Who only two weeks behind their Uncles from Across the Pond.

After a ground-breaking tenure by enthusiastic and ebullient David Tennant, we’re given a still-younger Doctor. In his mid twenties, the new Doctor, played by Northampton’s Matt Smith makes it rather hard to remember that the character once started as a geriatric who was called “Grandfather” by his co-star. But things change – he was so much older then; he’s younger than that now. I’m hip, and you all will be too, because the new Doctor is terrific.

Whereas David Tennant played the Doctor like mankind’s biggest fan, the new one has a more fluid relationship with our species. He constantly searches for trust in the eyes of his new companion, the adorable Karen Gillan, playing the spritely Amelia “Amy” Pond. He’s sensitive in a way the previous Doctor wasn’t – more touchy-feely.

The first episode, the Eleventh Hour, spent most of its time setting up the new companion and new character for the Doctor, but found time for a very solid little science fiction story, centering a chameleon like entity called a “multiform” who went by the name Prisoner Zero. Through a bit of time-jumping, we learned how annoying a Timelord can be, particularly one who consistently misses the target by ten or so years.

But we’re given an idea how romantic, in spite of or because of his unreliability, this itinerant traveler from the stars can be. He’s so romantic that his new companion jumps at the chance to travel with him, despite having a rather important appointment the next day, despite the fact that the Doctor has a habit of showing up years too late. Just what does Amy Pond want out of this alien?

The second episode, the Beast Below, shows a bit of new head writer Steven Moffat’s particular talent – his ability to give us the willies. And he’s used that talent to great effect when working under the last head writer, Russel T. Davies. From the gas-masked children asking if we’ve seen their mum to the statues that move when you’re not looking, Moffat has a real talent for subtle horror. His new creation, called, the “Smilers” are genuinely creepy, so watch out for them.

After seeing the first two episodes of the “new” new Doctor Who, I can honestly say that the show’s in safe hands, and that given quality writing like this, the show has at least another fifty years left in it. Doctor Who’s American Premiere is Saturday, April 17, at 8pm on BBC America.

I love Doctor Who, but never have the time to write about it. I still have a few episodes of Torchwood’s first season I haven’t written up, pathetically enough.

So we have another new Tyrant here, Jeremy, who’ll start blogging shortly about the good Doctor. And just in time for the brand new Doctor’s season to begin here in the States!

Confirming what most TV hounds already knew, 24 and Lost topped the list of LoveFilm.com’s most addictive television shows of all time.

Now, some might say that Lost is more addictive, and I can see that point to a degree. After all, 24 and Lost are my two favorite shows, now that Battlestar Galactica‘s off the air (still looking forward to The Plan this fall, though!)

But where Lost is addictive for that hugely mystifying secret that lies beneath it all, carrying its fans from season to season, with the promise of wrapping it all up next year, 24 is more or less a big blast of televised heroin (a drug that, coincidentally, Jack Bauer was addicted to briefly in Season 3). No matter how much you tell yourself you’re going to stop watching, you just have to check it out one more time, just one more time. (See also: Lays Potato Chips.)

Darren Bignell, the communications manager for the UK site, had this to say, according to the Telegraph:

We’re a nation of comfort lovers and the thought of curling up on the sofa with our favourite programmes is a very tempting one. Although crime doesn’t pay, as our list reveals, it most certainly pulls in the viewers, and shows like 24 have clearly found the right mix of suspense, drama and action to keep us coming back for more.

So, how do I feel about the list? Obviously, I’m right there with Nos. 1 & 2. Friends was an addictive favorite, and I feel it stands up. Heroes was great in season 1, which I’d rewatch. But I wouldn’t want to rewatch Seasons 2 or 3, even though I didn’t think they were as bad as most people were saying.

The Wire? AMAZING. It’d be higher on the list if more people had watched it. Doctor Who? Love it. Never seen a single episode of CSI (any flavor) or Prison Break, and I say that with a mark of pride. The Sopranos and Sex and the City were staples when they were on TV, and I’d say Sopranos was pretty damn addictive. While I enjoyed SATC, I don’t know that I considered it an addictive show I needed to watch.

I mean, I figured that in the end Carrie would end up with Big and their dance around it grew tiresome sometimes.

So, what do you think of this list? And what shows aren’t on it that you think should be?

A thought occurs to me as this episode opens:

It just can’t be a good idea to take flash photos of aliens/faeries/unknown creatures at night in a woods.

Just sayin’.

Of course, it’s easy to say that as the viewer of a sci-fi show where the main characters battle the bad alien of the week; I guess not so much when you’re some old lady who believes in faeries.

Oh, and by the way, I know this woman’s old and all, but doesn’t she have a digital camera???

The most interesting aspect to this episode, I thought, was that we begin to learn more about Captain Jack.

In fact, at that first flashback, I immediately said to myself, “That looks like World War I!” The doughboy uniforms from WWI have a very particular look; WWII uniforms were, somehow, less formal-looking, if that makes any sense.

I, of course, assumed I was wrong later in the episode, when Gwen finds the photo of Jack’s “father” on Estelle’s mantel. They were in love before the war, were separated because of it and never saw one another again. Jack just happened to look her up a few years back, once he could safely pretend he was his son.

Then, later, when he confesses to Gwen that he first experienced these “faeries” back during World War I, I remembered something: Didn’t he get thrown way back in time at some point? (Yes, he did.) So he’s really old, and we really don’t have any clue. Is he from WWII? Is he from the future? Why is he immortal?

Makes me realize, though, that Captain Jack and The Doctor have a lot in common – The Doctor is immortal, so is Jack, albeit reluctantly so. They can’t stand to see their loved ones age and die. So after the war, Jack never got in touch with Estelle again, because he couldn’t bear to see her fade away (plus, it would kind of blow his cover for him to never get a day older) – but he does truly love her, because all these years later, he’s tracked her down and helps take care of her.

It’s no wonder Captain Jack doesn’t sleep much, though (which he mentioned to Gwen in the second or third ep of the series) – he’s experienced so many things, that he’s gotta find it hard not to have it all race through his brain at sleep time.

And so, this nightmare, with the rose petals. And then a petal on his desk. And then the pedophile guy puking up petals.

I have to admit, at very first, I thought the little girl standing outside the school was Estelle’s granddaughter, and Estelle wasn’t picking her up because she was dead. But it just turns out her stepfather’s kind of a jerk and forgot to pick her up.

But no worries, because the faeries will protect her from the evil pedophile man. When he stopped Jasmine, though, I did think out loud, what child isn’t aware they shouldn’t get in a car with a stranger? Especially when the stranger gets the facts wrong about who was supposed to pick her up?

Now, we meet Estelle for real, and she’s lecturing about faeries. She believes they’re beautiful and wonderful and happy and friendly and loving. Jack doesn’t think so.

This being Torchwood, Jack’s right. But, still, the faeries are going after this bad guy, so it doesn’t seem all bad, no?

Jasmine is utterly creepy throughout the whole episode, though. She’s been convinced by the faeries that she needs to be with them. She is a chose one.

No one can hurt me.

Did shivers run down your spine right now?

Now we learn the woods behind Jasmine’s house have somehow managed to stay undeveloped, for the most part, since, well, forever. Even the Romans steered clear.

It does always bother me, though, on shows like this when a character has seen so many weird things and yet still, AGAIN, doubts the supernatural/alienness of what he or she is seeing. And thus Gwen thinks a circle of stones is perfectly natural and normal and couldn’t be supernatural?

I have to admit, though, this is where things got weird to me – why did the faeries go after Estelle? Because she took their photos? I never got a clear answer to that. She believes they’re good and loving. Wouldn’t leaving her alone help perpetuate that belief and cover their tracks?

But, no, they have to go after the old lady’s kittycat, and she has to protect Moses. (By the way, when Gwen first met Moses earlier in the episode, I just knew that cat would some how be a harbinger of some sort of doom.)

And, then, even though her kitty was making weird growly noises, WHY DID ESTELLE GO OUTSIDE? Of course, it doesn’t seem as if it would have made any difference, can’t these faeries get in anywhere they want, anyhow? Was her mystical New Age-y stuff keeping them out?

Then the faeries smash up Gwen’s apartment and leave a mini-stone circle in the middle of her floor, just in case she wasn’t sure who trashed the place.

OK, I got a little lost here, too, where the faeries are children going back eons, “from the lost lands.” Of course, it’s terribly obvious Jasmine is the next chosen one. Is it because she’s an outcast? I’d suppose the creatures seek out the children who are a bit off, a bit outcast, a bit out of the mainstream, because it’s bound to be easier to convince them to join the ranks of the faeries.

And now Jasmine can see the old-growth forest, and because the chosen ones, the faeries, can move backward and forward in time at will, we discover at the very end, with Gwen, that Jasmine has indeed moved back in time.

In a photo of a young girl with faeries that was supposedly legitimate, but debunked by the girl later in life as having been posed and fake, is one particular fairy, Gwen notices. She enlarges the section of photo. And again. And again.

It’s Jasmine.

By the way: Roy, you don’t put frozen meat patties on the barbecue grill. You thaw them first. You’re welcome. Oh, wait, you’re dead. Nevermind.

Given the name of the episode, we knew the mortal (well, you know what I mean) enemies of the Doctor – of all mankind, in fact – the Cybermen, would be making some sort of appearance.

And the Cybermen are always utterly creepy, so we were in for a ride.

They did, in the personage of Lisa, a former member of the Torchwood London team, the lady love of Ianto Jones. However, she was only half converted into a cyborg, we learn, which explains why she’s basically in some weird bikini bondage version of the Cybermen robot garb.

Because the Cybermen’s sole goal in life is to “upgrade” all mankind, as soon as you see that Ianto has been keeping Lisa secret from Captain Jack and the rest of the Torchwood Cardiff crew, you just know things can’t end well.

For those who can’t remember, the Cybermen managed to come to Earth ever-so-briefly at the end of Series 2 of the new Doctor Who. Torchwood London was messing with the rift between the Earth we know and the Earth from Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel from earlier in the season.

In the season-ending two-parter Army of Ghosts and Doomsday, we got the great Dalek v Cybermen showdown and lost Rose to the alternate Earth where her father was still alive and Mickey had decided to take up residence.

But before we got to that point, the Cybermen managed to partially make it through the rift and, pressed for time, started just converting the bodies of anyone they could get their metal mitts on rather than transferring their consciousness into brand-new Cybermen bodies.

Lisa was a victim of that conversion, but the Cybermen hadn’t managed to finish the job and Ianto carted her off and, apparently, has been keeping her in some sub-sub-sub basement of Torchwood Cardiff ever since.

He finally found some weird guy, Dr. Tanizaki, who’s an expert in cyborgs to see if he could make her all human again. He’s totally creepy, feeling Lisa up, Ianto has to restrain himself from punching him out, it looks like.

Lisa’s breathing and hearing are cybernetic already, and Tanizaki estimates that she’s 55 percent, 60 percent cybernetic at this point. Jones is really pathetic, telling Tanizaki how much they love one another and how he has to save her. She wakes up, there’s tears, blah blah blah.

She gets off the Cybertable and ends up putting Tanizaki on it, trying to upgrade him. Doesn’t end well. Ianto finds out and hides the body. He loves Lisa too much, and you can see that her love for Ianto is still strong enough that she won’t try to upgrade him, even though the Cyberwoman part of her wants only to do that.

Long story short, Captain Jack finally finds out what’s up, he almost kills Ianto for lying and for putting not just Torchwood, but all of Earth at risk for a Cybermen invasion just because he loved Lisa.

Though it was obvious that Gwen would be rescued, it was still totally creepy to see all those mechanical arms come down to do their cutting and pasting just before all the power was shut down. I mean, let’s face it – as cheesy as the Cybermen are, they are CREEPY.

In the end, the pterodactyl does lots of damage to Lisa, and then, somehow the pizza girl ends up going into the basement and Lisa transfers her brain into this poor woman.

But seeing as at least a couple of her senses already were cybernetic, does that mean that even in this new body, she would have still been slightly cybernetic? Do Captain Jack & co kill her because of that risk? I have to admit, I was kind of confused on that.

But it was also kind of sad that just one episode after Captain Jack teaches Gwen how to fire a weapon, she has to use it to kill someone who was just moments earlier, a completely innocent pizza girl.

In the end, Ianto faces his “are you with us or against us” moment and has to pick a side. He put everything at risk, and that just can’t happen. Torchwood’s mission and the safety of the planet must come first.

One side note: I love how in each episode, they have Captain Jack early on saying something about how Torchwood’s a secret organization dealing in alien technology. You can tell it was a new series at this point, because they wanna keep reminding the viewers what the show’s about.

Really?

Gwen’s first day on the job is a hunt for a sex-crazed alien who absorbs its partner just at the moment of climax?

How many times, exactly, did they have to show the scene where Carys had sex with the poor schmo in the bathroom of that club? After, maybe, the second time, it was kind of like, “Yeah, I’ve got the gist of it.”

That said, Captain Jack’s quip that the boy just “came and went” made me laugh out loud. As did the moment when Captain Jack tells the delivery guy to “put your trousers on and get out” and then observes, “It almost breaks my heart to say those words.”

Captain Jack does love the ladies. And gents. And, probably, aliens. He just loves. As Toshiko observes in this episode, “I’ve watched him in action, he’ll shag anything if it’s gorgeous enough.”

So, anyway, the episode made me think it’s a good thing there are CCTVs everywhere in the British Isles. Makes it far easier for Torchwood to do its job, I suppose.

What I found interesting about the episode, though, was that the gender of those doing the snogging seemed not to matter one little bit to anyone. And those of us who are familiar with Captain Jack knows that the gender of his partner doesn’t matter terrifically to him. A very gender-blind way of looking at life. And the show is so matter of fact about it that it isn’t a big deal.

I mean, sure, Gwen’s new coworkers are enjoying watching her and Carys get it on in the cell, but more because Gwen is such a half of a couple, the only member of the team who’s in a relationship. So her little breakdown is very amusing to them. Plus, most people find it hard to turn away from watching two people slobber all over each other.

Then there’s the little discussion at lunch about the Captain’s proclivities, and all anyone can agree on is that he’s an enigma wrapped inside a riddle that’s part of a puzzle. Basically – no one knows who he is, where he’s from and why he does what he does.

I wonder when, if ever, we’ll truly find out what’s behind Torchwood, and how far it goes back. Did Captain Jack start working with Torchwood after becoming immortal or because he was immortal? Was it alien technology that made him that way?

All the questions raised at lunchtime were great, though, because you know they’re questions on the viewers’ minds, too. It makes it clear that these are questions that, at some point, are likely to be answered. And that we’re not expected to know or understand quite yet.

I had to thank IMDB for one thing, though. I’d forgotten that Captain Jack had saved Doctor Who’s severed hand and wasn’t quite sure why he was so bound and determined to get that hand back. As we saw later on in Doctor Who, having that hand was essential to both bad guys doing bad things and for the doctor to regenerate.

Two other notes:

• Nice how a cop in Wales has no idea how to use a gun. Reminds us how different the States are, eh? But I was surprised to see so much use of guns on Torchwood, seeing as they’re virtually never used on Doctor Who. I mean, the Doctor pretty much solves all problems with his sonic screwdriver, and even though I love violent shoot-em-ups as much as … well, as much as most men who love violent shoot-em-ups, I’ve always found that endearing about Doctor Who.

• Anyone who’s had a horrible first day on the job can relate to Gwen’s problems here. Haven’t you ever done something so incredibly stupid when you’re just starting out on a job or a relationship or anything and are beyond embarrassed because you think you’ve just proved to everyone that you’re a moron?

The first-ever episode of the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood has all the obligatory, here’s who everyone is, here’s what they do, here’s the new team member exposition.

That’s OK, though. It also gave us a pretty good story to follow.

Someone is murdering people in Cardiff. Three have been murdered in recent days, each stabbed by an unknown assailant.

The cops are stumped. The three victims don’t seem connected.

But at each murder scene, the mysterious covert ops team, Torchwood, shows up to investigate.

The cops don’t know it, but the Torchwood team doesn’t care about who committed the murders; they just want to test out the nifty new alien technology they’ve come into ownership of – a metal glove that brings the dead back to life for two minutes.

We don’t realize it at first, but get a clue to it when all Capt. Jack seems to want to know from the dead guy is what it’s like to die. Doctor Who fans are well aware that the dashing captain can’t die or age. Hell, he hung on outside the Tardis as it traveled to the end of time and didn’t die. He is — at least — nearing 80, assuming he was about 18 or 19 when he was in the U.S. Army in the 1940s. Add 60 years to get to now, and that’s his minimum age.

Anyway, Police Constable Gwen Cooper is too nosy and finds a spot in a parking garage where she can see what’s going on with the Torchwood folk. My husband, by the way, immediately commented on the gap between Cooper’s two front teeth.

Captain Jack totally sees her seeing them, of course. She runs, blah blah blah. Cut to the police precinct, where they’re discussing how they’re more or less CSI: Cardiff, measuring the velocity of a kipper.

Kippers, for those who don’t know, are really smelly fish that folks in the U.K. like to eat. My father (a native EastEnder) doesn’t like many foods that have flavor, but he loves kippers. They make the house stink when you cook them. Honest.

What I wanted to know, though, was why Cooper was delivering coffee to everyone at the meeting where they were discussing the case. Was she just being nice or was that a clue that she was really not very important?

She responds to a bar fight, smacks her head against a wall, ends up in hospital. Sees Captain Jack running up the stairs and ends up at the top of the stairs, no one to be seen and the entire floor cordoned off.

No one knows why. She goes in. Now, I’m thinking her eyesight must have been pretty lame, because that was totally an alien she was walking toward and she kept acting as if all was normal.

OK, I know that she thought it was just a good disguise. But that was one NASTY looking alien. What I wanted to know was why Captain Jack and his cohorts waited until the Weevil actually killed that guy to get him under control? I mean, they leaped out the second the Weevil chomped down on the hospital worker. (Note to Weevil: Nice silk PJ’s.)

So Gwen plays detective (OK, she is a cop, so it’s not much of a stretch) and manages to find Torchwood’s HQ. I love how they actually ordered pizza under that name (though even before Captain Jack made it obvious he disapproved of that, you knew that there was no way he knew his team members were doing that).

The second they let Gwen down into the bowels of Torchwood to deliver the pizza, it’s obvious Captain Jack is on to her; there’s no way the regular pizza delivery guy gets to go down there. Plus, they’re Torchwood. Of course they know.

Introductions all around, we meet Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato, Suzie Costello and Ianto Jones (who I, personally, find the most … curious of the group, not counting the Captain, of course). You want to see the creature from the hospital? Here, Clarice, meet Hannibal Lecter. (You know you thought the same thing; even the same sort of cell, with the glass door with the airholes, etc.)

Hope  you enjoyed the tour, we have all sorts of cool tech that we try to figure out how to use, we never ever take it off the base.

Except for the three team members who do – Harper, with the “cologne” that makes anyone immediately fall in love with him; Sato with the amazing book reader; and Costello with the reviver glove we saw earlier in the episode. Ooops.

Meanwhile, Captain Jack takes Gwen out to a bar, slips her an amnesia cocktail that makes her forget everything, but our Gwen is a smart lass, and she types up everything on her computer, though Jones manages to sneak through the tubes that make up the Interwebs and delete it all just … as … she’s … passing … out.

All the next day, she’s remembering things that she can’t quite remember. I mean, she knows there’s something to remember, but she doesn’t know what. Or why. But she managed to jot down “remember” on a pamphlet on her desk, and that pamphlet leads her to the area right outside the Curb of Misperception that’s the entrance to Torchwood.

Costello sees her and has to kill her, but not before monologuing as to why she’s been going around killing random folks.

Someone had to die if they were going to test out the metal glove’s resurrection powers. So she chose who, making sure they couldn’t see her when she did it, with a REALLY nasty metal thingy with three blades that obviously came from aliens and so therefore was ANOTHER piece of alien technology taken out of Torchwood HQ.

Like many villains before her, she may have started out with the best of intentions. The gloves’ power, if harnessed properly, could eventually last more than 2 minutes at a time. And then, no one would have to die.

Of course, whenever anyone tries to achieve immortality, everything tends to go to crap. Costello kills Captain Jack (or so Gwen thinks; we, the viewers, know he can’t die), but before she can kill Gwen, Captain Jack revives, thanks to Costello’s continued monologuing and Gwen’s tearful pleading not to die.

So Costello kills herself. No resurrection desired there.

Gwen fears she’ll be amnesiaed again, but, of course, Captain Jack offers her a position with Torchwood and she accepts without a second thought.

Just like we knew she would, from the first moment she found a way to spy on what the Torchwood team was doing, back in the rain at a murder scene.

A fan of Doctor Who since its relaunch with Christopher Eccleston a few years ago (I know, I know, I need to go back and watch the old Doctor Who; I will – in my defense, I bought my brother-in-law a DVD collection of Doctor Who episodes with the VERY FIRST Doctor ever from the early 1960s, and it was … pretty much what you’d expect of science fiction from the early 1960s), I was very upset to find that Torchwood would only air on BBC America in the United States.

BBC America, you see, has exclusivity contracts with the cable providers that carry it, and no other competing provider is allowed to carry it, or something like that. All I know is that meant I couldn’t get Torchwood on my cable provider and, well, online TV watching has come a long way since then.

I know, I know, that was less than three years ago. Who knows, maybe I’m saying that as an excuse for the fact that I just prefer to watch TV on my TV (note to self: download boxee) rather than on my ‘puter.

Whatever.

I loved John Barrowman’s Capt. Jack Harkness when he appeared in “The Empty Child” — come on, I’m a red-blooded American girl. I know lesbians who are in love with Capt. Jack. (And, naturally, lots of gay men, too.) And the idea of him heading a Doctor Who spinoff (trivia: “Torchwood” is an anagram of “Doctor Who”) about some top-secret extra-governmental agency that hunted aliens just made me giddy.

OK, maybe not giddy, but I sure as heck wanted to watch it.

There are, however, only so many hours in the day, and I never got around to renting it from Blockbuster or via Netflix or any such way. This Chrismukkah, however, my husband surprised me with the very lovely purchase of Season 1 on DVD.

Now I can watch Capt. Jack anytime I want. Hee hee.

As I’m going to be traveling in Italy for the next week (and so I won’t be able to watch the final Battlestar Galactica episodes EVER until I return home because lately Hulu’s not been airing BSG until a week after the original broadcast date!!!!), I decided to watch the entire first season, blog about it and post daily reflections on the episodes while I’m gone.

My recaps start tomorrow (Sunday), but I’ll be checking in and probably sharing some thoughts on the bizarre mess that is Italian television in the interim, too. I’d love to hear what others have thought about the series. Fortunately, there have only been two seasons so far, so I might even catch up before Torchwood: Children of Earth (a five-episode Torchwood series focused on one threat that airs later this year on BBC) airs.
