Boycotting the Emmys

September 20th, 2009 | by | 30 rock, battlestar galactica, bored to death, curb your enthusiasm, emmys, fringe, hbo, intervention, jericho, kings, the wire

I went back and forth on whether I’d live-blog the Emmys tonight, mainly because, after all, this is a TV blog.

But then I thought about it.

Where’s Battlestar Galactica? Kings? Did Jericho ever get any love?

Sure, critical darlings 30 Rock and The Office, though relatively low-rated (compared with the CSI juggernaut, anyway) get lots of Emmy love – as they well should. But most of the best shows on television rarely get any attention from the academy, unless they’re on HBO. And even there, The Wire never got recognition and it was, bar none, the best show on television during its run.

And if nothing else, this blog is about quality television (OK, and sometimes Charles in Charge, but I was young, sue me). And the Emmy broadcast itself is not quality television. How does the Oscar ceremony win a freakin’ Emmy every year? (Though I have to admit, choosing Intervention for Best Reality Series is a teensy bit redemptive.)

So tonight, I’ll be watching the Curb Your Enthusiasm season premiere and the series premiere of Bored to Death. We’ll probably catch up with the season premiere of Fringe, which I was waiting for my husband’s return to watch.

The Emmys? I’ll probably glance on Twitter every now and again. Or maybe I’ll just wait ’til morning.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is indeed coming back – with the Seinfeld cast

Sept. 20.

Just a few short weeks and the man we love to hate — or, at least, dislike a lot, even as we laugh both with and at him — is returning to HBO.

Picture 1Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm are coming back for their seventh season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The story arc this season brings the cast of Seinfeld back together, too. A couple of episodes in, the four cast members — Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia-Louis Dreyfus and Michael Richards — play themselves and agree to a revival of the NBC series. They’ll be in five episodes and we’ll get to see everything but the full revival episode. We’ll see a read-through, rehearsals and filming.

James Hibberd at THR said there’d be other “familiar faces,” too (Newman!)

David even said it was “possible” the show would address Michael Richards N-word-laced comedy club tirade.

“It was like getting on a bicycle,” David said of writing “Seinfeld” dialog again. “Coming up with the right ideas about what they’d be doing 11 years later … that took some thought.”

As to whether the reunion show will be portrayed as good or a disaster, he wasn’t talking.

What I’ve loved about Curb is that Larry David is an incredibly stereotypical New Yorker, living in Los Angeles. On top of that, he’s also completely self-centered and even though he always wants to do the right thing, he has a helluva time doing the right thing.

If you recall, the end of last season had Cheryl divorcing Larry and Larry marrying the matriarch of the Black family, who came to live with him after Hurricane Katrina. Well, she (Vivica Fox) is still around, though that doesn’t mean Cheryl won’t appear, according to BuddyTV.

And the site also says Meg Ryan’s going to be on board.

I just pray, pray, pray that J.B. Smoove is back. The interplay between him and Larry was one of the funniest on-screen pairings ever.
