A surprisingly egalitarian Viking kingdom

hangin' with ragnarOne of the things I like best about Vikings is that the women are as badass as the men. And they don’t really have to tiptoe around and allow the men to visibly have all the power, as poor Cersei (when’s the last time you heard anyone refer to her as that) does on Game of Thrones.

I’ll be honest: I’m pretty sure it’s not very accurate. But despite it being on the History channel, I don’t care much about that. The cursory research I did showed that women’s and men’s roles were quite typical (men went on raiding parties and ruled and women took care of hearth and home.

However, women were respected in Viking society, moreso than in many other cultures. And in Norse mythology, there were some pretty strong goddesses.

Thing is, we accept inaccuracies in all our TV shows. Anyone think that Brooklyn Nine-Nine is like a real police department? I know plenty of journalists who had conniptions over how “unrealistic” The Newsroom was. Lawyers and cops love to hate the Law & Order shows.

Let’s celebrate Lagertha and Ragnar and their individual achievements and enjoy the fact that we see them both as completely kickass and it doesn’t matter what their gender is.
