Supernatural: Kiss and Man Up

Supernatural: Kiss and Man Up

I would like to admit up front that I have always felt that Supernatural is really Dean’s story. Don’t get me wrong, Sam is vital, but I feel like the whole story of the Winchester’s is all about Dean’s journey more than anything.

So this week, we had to put up with sad, vaguely annoying Dean for half of the episode, as he whined about how useless it all was, and how he was just gonna let Michael have his way with him. Quite frankly, feeling-sorry-for-himself Dean is no fun. Imagine my happiness when Castiel showed up and kicked Dean’s ass all over that dark alley!

I like the addition of making BabyWinchester Adam part of the mix. Once he was dead, it never occurred to me that he might be brought back, but that Zachariah is a wily one! I thought it was pretty clever, because Dean just can not resist the family thing, especially someone he sees as an innocent.

So, we end up in Van Nuys, of all places, in the Angel room. After Castiel once again shows us his mad Angel skillz, Dean and Sam crash in on Adam and Zach, and all kinds of gory business takes place, resulting in the spectacular ganking of Zachariah, and the mildly unexpected taking of BabyAdam by Michael (who is a big, loud Angel, it seems!).

The best part of this episode, is that Dean finally stops feeling sorry for himself, and it looks like he is ready to embrace Sam again. Hooray! Hopefully, this is gonna be a race to the finish line of this apocalypse, our brothers fighting shoulder to shoulder.

I know that Lucifer is busy being Jacob over on Lost, but I sure hope we get to see him again soon.

  1. Loved the ep, but it did make me wonder about one thing: What if Castiel is wrong? What if Dean SHOULD be Michael’s instrument? I mean, I doubt it, but just because we’ve gotten used to trusting Castiel doesn’t mean we should.

Also: loved your line about Lucifer. lol

  2. Amy – I am thinking that someone so pretty (Castiel) couldn’t be wrong! ;)
But yes, I am a little nervous he could be wrong…

  3. Great post, Erika. :D

Well heck, I have to say that Adam coming back from the dead (being brought back, rather) really threw me for a loop. I totally did not see that coming (well, not before it was teased in the opener, that is). I thought it was a nice twist in what has been a little bit of a draggy season at times. Yes, we get it, Lucifer and Michael want the brothers Winchester to be their vessels. Can we get on with the Apocalypse already? ;)

Erika, I’m with you about annoying, whiny Dean. I was just thinking the other day how much I miss early Dean, the one who was a smartass who didn’t let demons and ghoulies and other aspects of “the family business” get him down. I know he and Sam have been through a lot, but it breaks my heart to see him worn down like this. My favorite part of the epi was when he gave Sam that little wink in the Angel room. There’s the Dean I know and love! :D

I have to wonder how this season is finally going to play out, especially since season five is no longer the end game. Any thoughts?

  4. Beth! You know, I too wonder how they’re gonna end this thing, because I thought they might maybe kill the boys, but that was before the news of a season six. Of course, they could still die, because how many times have they died now?

I agree, the DeanWink was awesome and a welcome comeback of old school Dean. Let’s hope his new found zeal brings back the wise ass we know and love.

  5. At this point, I would just like it if season six weren’t full of misery. But then, this is Supernatural. If I want that, maybe I’d better start watching a different show. ;) Would it be too much to ask of Kripke if he would just give these boys a happy ending? (And no, I don’t mean THAT.)

I still go back to what I loved about earlier seasons. Yes, the boys had it rough, but there just wasn’t as much sheer unhappiness. I would really just like to have that back, even if it’s only a little bit.

  6. Beth – I’m guessing sheer misery doesn’t end until next season. :( Although, wouldn’t it be nice if Sam and Dean and Castiel and Bobby found some joy in fighting the apocalypse? Maye we can get Ben Edlund on that.

  7. Erika, you’re probably right about the misery lasting right up until the very end of the series. I go back and forth with the idea that it wouldn’t be Supernatural without the struggle and the sadness. And you know, I get that the Apocalypse is not supposed to be all sweetness and light, and I get that the boys (especially Dean) are tired. I’m tired too, after all of this. I love the show, I do. It’s just so…grim right now. Even the funny episodes aren’t as much fun as they used to be. I know this wasn’t ever a light-hearted show, but the inherent belief that good will triumph over evil has had the holy heck beaten out of it this season (if you’ll pardon the pun).

There’s an Edlund-written episode on April 29th, so maybe it will be at least a little fun. On the other hand, maybe not; Ben Edlund did write the one in which both Jo and Ellen died.

If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go watch me some Season 1 Dean to get out of this funk. ;)
