Curb Your Enthusiasm is indeed coming back – with the Seinfeld cast

Sept. 20.

Just a few short weeks and the man we love to hate — or, at least, dislike a lot, even as we laugh both with and at him — is returning to HBO.

Picture 1Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm are coming back for their seventh season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The story arc this season brings the cast of Seinfeld back together, too. A couple of episodes in, the four cast members — Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia-Louis Dreyfus and Michael Richards — play themselves and agree to a revival of the NBC series. They’ll be in five episodes and we’ll get to see everything but the full revival episode. We’ll see a read-through, rehearsals and filming.

James Hibberd at THR said there’d be other “familiar faces,” too (Newman!)

David even said it was “possible” the show would address Michael Richards N-word-laced comedy club tirade.

“It was like getting on a bicycle,” David said of writing “Seinfeld” dialog again. “Coming up with the right ideas about what they’d be doing 11 years later … that took some thought.”

As to whether the reunion show will be portrayed as good or a disaster, he wasn’t talking.

What I’ve loved about Curb is that Larry David is an incredibly stereotypical New Yorker, living in Los Angeles. On top of that, he’s also completely self-centered and even though he always wants to do the right thing, he has a helluva time doing the right thing.

If you recall, the end of last season had Cheryl divorcing Larry and Larry marrying the matriarch of the Black family, who came to live with him after Hurricane Katrina. Well, she (Vivica Fox) is still around, though that doesn’t mean Cheryl won’t appear, according to BuddyTV.

And the site also says Meg Ryan’s going to be on board.

I just pray, pray, pray that J.B. Smoove is back. The interplay between him and Larry was one of the funniest on-screen pairings ever.

Lost tidbits from Comic Con

I’m not big on spoilers (ask Rickey over at Riding With Rickey or Adam at The Jack Sack about the finale for 24‘s Season 6 and they’ll explain), but I can’t help myself with Lost.

Lost banner

I think that’s because the producers are really good about letting big tidbits slip out that don’t spoil the viewing, because the show’s frankly far too complicated to let a little rumor about who’s appearing in the final season to ruin the ending.

So I read several posts about the Lost panel at Comic Con and found out some really fun bits that serve only to make me want it to start NOW. As in, right this very frakkin’ minute. Except I don’t, because that would mean it would all be over too soon..

If you don’t want to know anything and are assiduously avoiding spoilers, then don’t click through. If you do, haven’t read other updates yet or just want to hear my thoughts on the matter, click away.

Jericho, the show that wouldn’t die

July 25th, 2009 | by | jericho

UPDATED info at bottom of post

I have a special love for the show Jericho, which was, by the by, my entré into social media.

It was such a great post-apocalyptic drama, which CBS screwed up in scheduling and then canceled at literally the last minute, after the season finale aired. Fans rallied, sent tons of peanuts and created arguably the most active online fandom ever (maybe all the Whedonites combined are larger), in the end convincing CBS to give the show a second chance.

Jericho_recap_season_2

An abbreviated second season was aired, with the full season two storyline condensed into eight episodes with one helluva ending. There. I just got chills thinking about it.

Anyhow, the fans still didn’t give up. They’ve pushed for a season three, a movie, a comic book, anything to continue the story of an America riven in two by traitors with nukes.

So I happily read an e-mail from the Jericho Rangers group on Facebook, sent by Dawn Aker Braddock, who spoke with Gwen (Ratkeeper), who’s at Comic Con in San Diego.

Despite the fact that the show hasn’t been on the air for a year and a half, there was a Jericho Panel, with Dan Shotz, Karim Zreik, Matthew Federman, Stephen Chbosky, Jonathan Steinberg and Lennie James (go Hawkins!). Gwen reported that the room, which can hold more than 400 people, was three-quarters full.

Here’s the meat of the note:

The Producers said the movie is very much alive and that they are looking for the right story line that they can use to finalize the sale of the movie and the comic book is key to that.

There will be 6 issues not 4 and they will be monthly starting in October 2009. The book will be a bound set of the 6 comic books. Karim and Dan spent time with Gwen and her volunteers at the Jericho booth before and after the panel. They even signed some items for fans.

There was a woman from CBS with the group who was amazed at the Jericho fans organization and marketing. Gwen placed Devils Due stickers on the back of the Jericho business cards and DDP was getting large numbers at their booth.

The key to solidifying the movie will be comic book sales and our efforts to reach fans not online who want more Jericho. We will be finalizing Operation Comic Book and it will be launched next week.

Another comment made by Karim and Dan was the ratings for Jericho on the CW were very good, especially for re-runs on a Sunday night. The ratings have been noticed by the CBS executives and that is why the comic book is going forward with more episodes.

Rangers are needed to step into the breach and help raise awareness of the comics and movie, the note went on to say. If you’re a Facebook member and want to keep tabs on the news, you can join the Jericho Rangers group here.

The Rangers need volunteers for at least these following comic conventions: Atlanta, Philly, Chicago, London, Toronto, New York, Dallas, Orlando. Contact Dawn through the Facebook group linked to above if you can help out.

She points out:

Our show was cancelled 16 months ago yet they send the producers, writers and major star to launch the comic book. This is business and that adds up to a larger plan. CBS had a pr person there for the panel and that she, dan and karim stopped by the jericho fan table and signed things. They took the time to stop by the fan booth for Jericho, that is huge in the business.

Here’s a full list of of conventions, including many others beyond those listed above. Dawn wanted to specify that the volunteers would man fan tables. The conventions listed above are the most likely to get anyone from Jericho on panels or for appearances, though even that’s not guaranteed.

24, Lost – the most addictive shows of all time

July 23rd, 2009 | by | 24, battlestar galactica, csi, doctor who, friends, heroes, jack bauer, lost, prison break, sex and the city, the sopranos, the wire

Confirming what most TV hounds already knew, 24 and Lost topped the list of LoveFilm.com’s most addictive television shows of all time.

Now, some might say that Lost is more addictive, and I can see that point to a degree. After all, 24 and Lost are my two favorite shows, now that Battlestar Galactica‘s off the air (still looking forward to The Plan this fall, though!)

picture-11Lost banner

But where Lost is addictive for that hugely mystifying secret that lies beneath it all, carrying its fans from season to season, with the promise of wrapping it all up next year, 24 is more or less a big blast of televised heroin (a drug that, coincidentally, Jack Bauer was addicted to briefly in Season 3). No matter how much you tell yourself you’re going to stop watching, you just have to check it out one more time, just one more time. (See also: Lays Potato Chips.)

Dirty Sexy Money: Let’s wrap it all up now, shall we?

July 18th, 2009 | by | dirty sexy money

Jul

This first episode back after being away for eons – before Thanksgiving? I can’t even remember anymore – was actually a rather lame “let’s catch everyone up on what they missed and how we’ve changed the plotline so we can wrap everything up now that we’ve been canceled” show.

DirtySexyMoney

Now, I figured out relatively early on that Mr. Chauffeur was lying to Ms. Tabloid about the Darlings. But the episode still seemed torturous.

It was catching us up on what had happened, except it was mostly lies. What the tabloid queen was saying was all true, but we didn’t get to see any of that. We saw all the made-up stuff, which was all borderline insane. (Look, if you didn’t figure out by the time Juliet Darling’s story was finished that it had all been made up, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you. And a tunnel in Jersey City, too, for that matter.)

So lemme see if I understand what’s REALLY happening:

• Juliet Darling is in a mental institution.

• Leticia Darling has been arrested for violating parole and tried to flee the country after all her friends ditched her.

• Nick George has been earning his pay.

• Karen Darling is still marrying Simon, even though they were both spying on each other and Karen’s still in love with Nick.

• Patrick Darling subpoenaed his father (or did he? I had trouble keeping track of which parts were lies and which parts were truth there) or is having some sort of having a really big problem with dad, probably having to do with Carmelita.

• Jeremy Darling’s not doing anything.

• We still have no real idea who actually killed Nick’s father, Dutch.

And if there weren’t just three more episodes left, I wouldn’t bother finding out the answer to that last question.

And the Emmys should go to …

The Emmy nominations came out today and I just had to get my three cents in.

Now, if you want to know who ALL the nominees are in every frakkin’ category, go here. I’m here only to speak about the categories I care about, as well as to say that 24 and Battlestar Galactica should win in all the technical and music categories, unless they’re up against one another. In those cases, tiebreaker goes to Battlestar Galactica.

By the way, WTF is wrong with the Emmy people that the BSG cast STILL got passed over for acting Emmys? Someone needs to explain this to me. Seriously. Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell deserve frakkin’ Oscars for their work on the show, nevermind Emmys, dammit.

OK, so nominees are listed below, with my commentary in italics:

Entourage: The boys are back in town

July 13th, 2009 | by | entourage

Jul

Yeah, that was a cliche, but I couldn’t help myself.

I’m so excited to see my favorite boys back on TV.

entourage-season-six-poster

From everything-ist Ari Gold (sexist, racist, etc-ist) and his perhaps-no-longer-long-suffering assistant, Lloyd to Vince, Drama, Turtle and E, as well as the long-missed Shauna (her response to Ari’s remark about having only 4 percent body fat was lovely and profane, as usual) – the show’s return to the airwaves last night was a breath of fresh air.

It made me mourn for the heady days when it started and Sopranos and Six Feet Under were still on the air, but it has a couple of good new shows as its lead-in: True Blood and Hung. All in all, an enjoyable two hours of television.

But we are here to talk about Entourage, and all that’s happened since we last saw our boys, when Vince found out he was gonna be the lead in Scorcese’s Gatsby.

Torchwood: Combat

July 4th, 2009 | by | torchwood

Jul

It was only a matter of time before we had another weevil-centric episode.

picture-42

We still don’t know much more about what weevils actually are, but we know a bit more about them now in this Fight Club-ish episode, where they’re used as punching (and kicking and biting and whatever else) bags.

That’s how we find out the weevils have a low-grade telepathy that allows them to communicate with one another. Janet, Torchwood’s weevil (“Barbara didn’t sound right,” Capt. Jack explains), is in pain because of this. They take her (him?) to the spot where other weevils have been kidnapped and track her to find out what’s going on.

Owen’s been working on getting on the inside in other ways and ends up in the fight cage with Janet.

Eureka: My favorite town in America

July 1st, 2009 | by | eureka

My favorite thing about Eureka is the fun gadgets and inventions. Like S.A.R.A.H., the sheriff’s house.

That the people and relationships are well-drawn is just the icing on the cake. The first-season finale was heartbreaking. And last season’s finale had the shocking side effect of making me like Nathan Stark for the first time ever.

Very minor spoilers ahead, but I felt I should warn you.
