I don’t know why I’ve had a hard time this week writing about 24.

I think it’s a combination of factors:
Tony is so utterly bad (unless he’s not) – boo! Chloe’s back – yay! Jack’s dying – boo! Jack went off on Janis Gold (otherwise known as Grimace, in some circles) – yay! Larry’s still dead – sorry, best I can do is neutral on that one. I only liked him for about 5 minutes before he was killed.
I can’t believe that Jack is going to die, and I assume that Kim is giving blood or spinal fluid or stem cells or whatever it is that she needs to donate in order to save Daddy, despite what he said. At least she’s no longer with Pony Boy.
Jack cannot die from mad cow. There’s another season to go.
There’s still a chance Tony might still be good, but I doubt it.
Chloe is totally Chloe, which makes me happy. But I also hate Mary Lynn Rajskub for looking that good so soon after having a baby.
Janis must be stopped. I don’t think she’s the mole, though. Unfortunately. It would be really sweet if she were.
But I realized Monday night how desperately Jack misses David Palmer. And how very much I, as a viewer, miss the character. He may well be the best president this country’s ever had.
Sure, Jack has mad cow and is slightly insane right now. But the reason he said Palmer’s name is that he knows Palmer would trust him, Palmer would know that if he said to do something, it needed to be done. And he also feels incredibly guilty for vouching for Tony.
Jack is at a crossroads.
Whatever happens at the end of this season, Jack will never be the same.
Next season will be different, even though CTU’s supposed to return. Jack can’t do this anymore. He’s given absolutely everything to his country and all that’s happened in return is that everything he’s ever cared about has been taken away, except for Chloe. She’s all he has left.
I remember when Chloe first started, she annoyed the crap out of me, as well as many other 24 fans. But she grew on you, like mold, in large part because of her unflinching loyalty to Jack. No one has ever had Jack’s back more than Chloe.
If Jack were to die, I truly believe Chloe would feel the loss deeper than anyone, even Kim.
Have faith, Chloe. We love you, almost as much as we love Jack.
P.S. I cannot take credit for coining “moozure” – it was, of course, my pal Adam over at The Jack Sack, who came up with that one on the fly Monday night. Always the intrepid reporter- citing her sources! Thanks for the tip of the cap, darling.
As for Chloe being the only thing Jack as left- I agree. Kim Bauer is expendable
Nice blog, Amy, but “There’s still a chance Tony might still be good, but I doubt it.” He did shoot and kill a bunch of feds including Larry – how is there even the slightest chance he did that “for the greater good”?
I am still on the Tony-could-be-good bandwagon, but it would take an extreme fanwank at this point (and I may be blinded by his extreme hotness while being bad)… Someone over on TWoP had figured out a way. It was pretty convoluted, but this is 24 we’re talking about… Jack has killed his share of innocents in the name of security, etc.
Anyhoo, I am enjoying CrazyJack almost as much as I enjoy RighteousJack. And finally, Chloe and Janis tech nerds together!! Mary Lynn deserves major props for her acting chops in this episode. Chloe usually is a snark fest, but her empathy for her family, the heartbreak ove Bill’s death, and her dismay over Tony (but loyalty to Jack) was really, most excellent. Well done, Mary Lynn!!
@Adam – Yeah, Kim is just so much window dressing for the boys at B4B now.
When even RFTR is not singing her praises, you know she’s over.
@Loren – Remember, Jack killed Chappel and Curtis for the greater good. I find it extraordinarily hard to believe that Tony’s doing anything for the greater good anymore, but there is that ever-so-remote possibility that only die-hard fans of 24 could ever entertain.
@Erika – I agree both about Crazy Jack and Mary Lynn. He’s fabulous (and talk about acting chops, Kiefer deserves the Emmy again). And Mary Lynn really brought a new depth to Chloe this season, I think.
Good post Amy. I think this might be 24′s most entertaining season ever. The only problem though is I can’t figure out what believable backstory they are going to come up with for Tony as to why he went evil. I don’t think at all Tony is operating for the greater good. He already was faking being bad, then went back to good, and now is a real terrorist. If the 24 writers try another lame greater good angle it will be terrible.
The other thing that bugs me is that 24 keeps adding way too many new characters. The new evil group for example and Olivia’s new contact. I have no doubt Jack will not die and that Kim will save him. Janis is annoying and Larry kinda annoyed me too so I thought it was cool they killed him off. The best thing about Janis is that Jack got to go off on her. Just give Kiefer Sutherland another emmy now.
@Tim – Yeah, I have to agree about Tony, though I’ll always hold out a little hope for him. As for a believable backstory – the president of the United States and other powerful people (including Jack’s father and brother) were complicit in Michelle’s murder. I think that one’s gonna do it.
