The big debate Monday night on Blogs4Bauer’s liveblog of Hour 14 was the status of moles.

Right now, it seems as if there are so many moles in the White House, the Rose Garden should collapse in on itself.

Let’s look at the candidates, shall we?

So Say We All: The Battlestar Galactica Blog Carnival, Ed. 4.5.9

March 17th, 2009 | by | battlestar galactica, blog carnival, so say we all

Mar

Everyone, it seems, felt as if they were in a holding pattern this week, with a really good ep of Battlestar Galactica that was totally just the first hour of the end, and answered really nothing at all.

The biggest question seemed to be what the point of the flashbacks was, though the consensus was that they were quite good, whether or not they were necessary.

I would like to make this comment about the Baltar flashbacks – I think that Caprica Six was so solicitus toward Julius Baltar for more than one reason. I think she saw solving that problem as a way to get on Gaius’ good side, and that was vital. But she was, indeed, taken with Julius, despite his crudeness. Was it a matter of having a respect for one’s parents, parents whom Six did not know but, somehow, deep down, knew she had and had respect for?

Or, and this is TOTALLY speculative and I have no reason to think it other than I’m trying to figure it all out, is Julius some frakked up version of Daniel and Six knows on some level that he’s important and should be taken care of? There’s been some speculation in the blogosphere that Kara and Gaius could be brother and sister, both children of Daniel. I find it hard to believe that Julius could actually be Daniel, but don’t forget that Daniel disappeared from Kara’s life when she was quite young, and there were multiple copies of all the “new” skinjobs.

There are a zillion reasons none of this makes sense, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything in the broader scope of BSG.

Oh, and just one more thing: way back when, Ron Moore told Mo Ryan that the ruined Earth WAS indeed our Earth. Not some other Earth. It’s Earth. There’s no Earth they’re suddenly going to discover.

They have found Earth. This is the Earth that the 13th Colony discovered, they christened it Earth. They found Earth.

And with that, I give you the penultimate So Say We All: The Battlestar Galactica Blog Carnival.

Big Love, Breaking Bad and Aaron Paul

March 16th, 2009 | by | big love, breaking bad

Mar

It had been a while since we had seen Scott on Big Love, and there he appeared last night, all sadness and apologies to Sarah that he hadn’t been around to help her get through the pregnancy and miscarriage.

As Ben punched Scott out last night, the estranged boyfriend seemed … more familiar than in the past.

“Is that the guy from Breaking Bad?” my husband asked.

I answered my husband as I am wont to do, with an offhanded, “Nah, no way.”

Then I paused, looked again. Nah, couldn’t be. By the end of the scene where Sarah and Scott were — ahem — being intimate, I knew it was indeed the hapless Jesse Pinkman from one of my favorite shows on TV, Breaking Bad.

There are two things that make Breaking Bad as awesome as it is: Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. And Cranston won an Emmy for his awesomeness last year, so that one goes without saying.

picture-32

So Aaron Paul is on not one, but two of my favorite shows.

On HBO, as Big Love hurtles toward an incredible season finale next weekend, Scott promises to figure prominently into Sarah’s life.

On AMC, Jesse and Walter just escaped from the insanely murderous (and now dead) Tico (they have Emmy awards for guest stars, no?) and from being discovered by Walter’s brother-in-law, Hank, who’s both a total hardass and a total softie.

Battlestar Galactica: Daybreak, Part 1

March 14th, 2009 | by | tv shows

Mar

I must admit, I really enjoyed the flashbacks to Caprica City “before the fall.”

Baltar living the good life; Roslin loving and then losing her family, learning Lee had stolen Zac’s girlfriends before… Though the scene with Lee all totally drunk in his apartment and chasing the pigeon was utterly puzzling and made no sense to me. And I’d love to know what Adama had to do that he believed to be beneath him.

In fact, as Roslin stood in the fountain in her nightgown and dressing gown, it once again occurred to me that the fact this woman has yet to win an Emmy for her work on this series is just frakkin’ criminal.

So keep all that in mind as I say this:

WHAT ON KOBOL WAS THE POINT OF ALL THAT?

OK, I’ve gotten that out of my system.

picture-31

I do truly believe – perhaps because I must – that Moore & Eick wouldn’t have shared these scenes with us if they weren’t going to have it all make sense in the end. And perhaps it’s SciFi’s fault, making the three hours of “Daybreak” be split into two pieces, with the final two hours coming next week. Sure, let’s blame SciFi – after all, it’s their fault we’ve had to wait this long for this half of the season.

In fact, I find it hard to really review last night’s episode, because it was so obviously just the setup for everything that is to come. Act I, so to speak.

But here we go, anyway:

The Carnival of Bauer!!! The Bill Buchanan Memorial edition

March 13th, 2009 | by | 24, blog carnival, carnival of bauer, jack bauer

Mar

All across 24 fandom, people remain in mourning for a man we once disliked but came to love almost as much as Jack and Tony.

Call him a mime. Call him Chiggy Killer. Call him Billy Boy. Whatever you want to call him, do it with the flag at half-mast and hat over heart.

First off, we have Jeff Kouba with not one, but TWO glorious posts at Truth v. The Machine. In 24 Day 7 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM he recaps the hour, including the secret love Bill harbored for Chloe. And my favorite sentence of the Carnivals so far: “In the subsequent chaos, approximately 28 of the remaining 4 Africans are gunned down.” Then, he confesses he actually watches Dollhouse and noticed a horrible secret connecting it to 24, in It would explain a lot.

Adam gets all mystical and ponders who or what Bill might come back as if he were reincarnated, in 24 Season 7: Bill Buchanan, Reincarnated? posted at The Jack Sack™.
Note to Adam: We all know why you offered up No. 4. Have you come out of your Scotch bath yet?

King Tom presents Ode To Bill posted at King Tom’s Kingdom and includes my favorite James Morrison (the actor, not the dead musician) photo ever: The New York Yoga magazine cover with Morrison on the cover. He’s a yoga master, after all. Tom also reminds us that he had a relationship with Michelle Dessler, yet still bore no ill will toward Tony.

Tom Harris, a British MP (minister of Parliament), is only up to Season 4, but he offers up how his son asked, “Does Superman wear Jack Bauer pyjamas?” (That’s how those wacky Brits spell pajamas) in his personal blog, And Another Thing… and offers up this quite accurate statement: “Jack Bauer is the man every man wants to be like but is also really, really scared of.”

Blogs4Bauer’s very own V the K handled this week’s TiVo blogging duties, deftly weaving comedy (igniting Jack’s farts to kill the terrorists) with the tragedy of Bill’s death (Jack comes perilously close to showing an emotion). It is, of course, over at Blogs4Bauer.

Then there’s the now-cliché, but always amusing, Jack Bauer vs. Chuck Norris posted at 944.com.  We’ve been through this before. Jack shoots Chuck before Chuck even thinks about doing a flying crane leap or whatever it is he does.

And, finally, here’s a matchup we haven’t seen before: Jack Bauer vs. Candyman posted at Digital Spy. They chose the horror film monster because the actor who played Gen. Juma also played Candyman. (I’ve only said it twice now, and I’m not in front of a mirror, don’t worry.) Given that the C-man is already dead and has a swarm of bees at his disposal, this isn’t your ordinary matchup. Nice.

That concludes this edition of The Carnival of Bauer!!!. Submit your blog article to the next edition of carnival of bauer!!! using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

Want to host a future edition of the carnival? Say so in the comments and mention your favorite Jack Bauer kill.

Battlestar Galactica: Desperately avoiding spoilers

March 12th, 2009 | by | tv shows

Mar
12

I used to be a spoiler kind of gal.

I loved to find out what was going to happen on my favorite shows and being surprised sooner rather than later.

But in the last couple of years, I’ve been avoiding spoilers like the plague. It all started toward the end of 24‘s Day 6, when I read on Ausiello and BuddyTV that Tony Almeida was coming back from the dead for the finale.

To this day, I’m not sure if my disappointment at the finale was colored by a lack of Tony (hey – I COINED the term “crapapalooza” to describe Day 6, so don’t go telling me all about how bad it was; I know. But think about the finale – Bill (rip) got his own sack and piloted a helicopter, Jack leaped from the ‘copter after blowing up an oil rig so that he could go swim and see Audrey; the scene with SecDef Heller was RIVETING and it was so sad to see Jack stand at the edge of the cliff).

I just was sitting there, waiting to see our long-thought-dead Tony show up and Jack be stunned and then … fade to black.

Didn’t happen.

Supposedly, the powers that be decided to hold off on Tony until Season 7, blah blah blah, but whatever. Whether the spoilers were right at some point or never right doesn’t really matter – they were wrong.

But with the end of Battlestar Galactica barely more than a week away, spoilers are all the heck over the place. So I don’t read any BSG posts or news stories except those submitted for my weekly So Say We All blog carnival.

picture-31

That’s how I found this post by carnival regular Kenneth Hynek. He submitted it early for next week’s carnival. I really enjoy Kenneth’s thoughtful posts each week on Battlestar, so before I knew it, I was caught up in reading it.

He warned about the spoilers, so I don’t blame him. And he gives his thoughts on each, as to whether they’re realistic, how he feels about them, etc.

But halfway through, I stopped reading because I was just too engrossed.

24: Hour 13

March 11th, 2009 | by | 24

Mar
11

I’m still sad that Bill Buchanan died, even though I predicted it (well, him or Aaron) in my post last week.

Here’s a link to a screenshot of the … moment … sent in to Blogs4Bauer.

And here’s the official B4B tribute photo:

I, like many 24 fans, was not particularly fond of Bill Buchanan when he made his first appearance in Season 4. Back then, he was a suit and he didn’t immediately believe Jack. Remember? Of course, by the end of the season, he was a convert and even got detained for a period of time.

One of the best quotes ever on 24 came that season, from Bill to Chloe:

Chloe, we’re in an active code. We don’t have time for your personality disorder, you understand me?

And then, in Season 5, to Miles Papazian:

You have no idea what you’re dealing with, you little ass kisser.

And then, in Season 6:

We have to do better than we’re doing, and we have to to it faster!

And then he even managed to get Karen over from the dark side (though only temporary, as she fired him to save her own ass, but that was Season 6, which was totally craptastic anyhow). And even though he dressed like a mime who needed to shave this season, he built an awesome CTU in exile in a pretty funky old abandoned building.

He even pulled Tony back from being a bad guy.

And who can forget one of the few shining moments of Season 6 when Jack HANDED BILL HIS VERY OWN SACK?

Look, Adam over at The Jack Sack has been doing the best tributes to Bill for the past two days (be thankful, because if Aaron Pierce had been killed off, Adam would be wandering in the desert right now, and not because Passover’s almost here), so check it out.

Other than mourning Bill, I just wanted to make a few points about Monday’s ep:

• Awe.Some.

• The First Daughter is a be-yotch of the nth degree. She’s gonna be trouble. Or a mole. Or both.

• Ethan’s actually not too bad. This week.

• Larry Moss – still an idiot.

• Tony?

• Chloe?

• Jon Voight, finally. Now we’re on to the REAL plot of the season.

• President Taylor really pissed me off. I don’t know if I like her anymore.

• Apparently, Juma didn’t take a Berlitz class in English, because he thought “release” meant “kill,” so he killed a random hostage.

• Taylor’s veep may be the worst veep yet on 24. And that’s saying A LOT.

• Did he really think you could “turn off” the Internet? Oy.

Thanks to 24 Wiki for the BillB quotes.

So Say We All: The Battlestar Galactica Blog Carnival, Ed. 4.5.8

March 10th, 2009 | by | battlestar galactica, blog carnival, so say we all

Mar

I just realized the other day that I am going to MISS the final two hours of Battlestar Galactica when it airs because I’m going to be on an airplane to Italy.

Yeah, you read right. And the way Hulu’s been airing the last few episodes, they’re not available online for eight days after the original airdate. So what does that mean? Well, it could actually mean no BSG blog from me for more than a week after the LAST TWO HOURS EVER of Battlestar Galactica airs.

It’s like a cosmic joke being played on me. Sigh. I know, I really have no right to complain, it’s not as if I’m going to prison or, say, Des Moines, but still …

Anyway, this episode had mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed liked appreciated it. It’s hard to say I enjoyed or liked something that was so gut-wrenching, but I definitely appreciated it.

Jericho, the comic book

March 9th, 2009 | by | jericho

Mar
09

The anxiously awaited news about Jericho finally came out today, and it’s pretty much what I expected: A new comic book series based on the show.

Believe it or not, I couldn’t actually find the news on the CBS website, but thanks to my Jericho buddies on Facebook and The Futon Critic, I was able to get the info.

picture-2

Basically, Devil’s Due Publishing will publish a new comic book series that “will pick up where the television program left off.”

That, of course, would be at the start of the Second American Civil War, with Jake & Hawkins convincing Texas to join the right side.

The really amazing thing is that Dan Shotz, Jon Turteltaub, Carol Barbee, Karim Zreik and Jon Steinberg will all be involved in the development of the comic book. How awesome is that?

Said Shotz:

Jericho is alive and well, thanks to the amazing fans who’ve driven us to find new and fresh ways to tell the Jericho story.

And then DDP President Josh Blaylock:

I can’t tell you how cool it is for DDP to be able to continue the Jericho story in comic book form. We plan to give fans the story they’ve been craving. This is going to be epic stuff.

Sounds pretty great to me.

Big Love: Rough Edges

March 8th, 2009 | by | big love

Mar
08

Tonight was quite possibly the best episode ever of Big Love.

You have to admit, you’ve been waiting for YEARS for Nikki Grant to get hers.

And, frankly, I was glad to see Bill embarrassed by Nikki’s betrayal. He’s always excused Nikki’s behavior and he is always, ALWAYS trying to play one side against the other.

picture-21

Honestly, I get sick and tired after a while hearing Bill talk about the principle and the hereafter. He was kicked off the compound and his father treats him like crap. He “believes” in the principle because his wife was about to die and he needed money to help care for her, and Nikki to be a nursemaid.

So he sold his soul and his principles to Roman Grant when he needed it; but then he turns on Roman the second he doesn’t personally need Roman anymore. He affiliates himself with Roman when he needs it, then affiliates himself with Albie when he needs it. Then he double-crosses both or either at a moment’s notice.
